The Pwani University International Transdisciplinary Conference and Innovation Expo: Connecting Communities and Academia: Co-creating Sustainable Solutions for Global Challenges

The inaugural Pwani University International Transdisciplinary Conference and Innovation Expo will bring together scientists, students, researchers, innovators, government representatives, industry leaders and community change makers from Kenya and across the globe. As a transdisciplinary-oriented conference and innovation expo, the theme of the congress is to Connect Communities and Academia to enable the Co-creation of Sustainable Solutions that address local and global challenges. Under this main theme, the meeting will address three topical areas:

  • Technology for inclusive development
  • Cultural Knowledge, Ethics, and Equity
  • Blue Economy, Marine Resources and Coastal Livelihoods

These topical areas cut across diverse fields of knowledge, fostering collaboration and innovation beyond traditional disciplinary, interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary boundaries, and they speak to individuated as well as collective overlapping societal challenges

Technology for inclusive development

Kenya’s development trajectory increasingly depends on harnessing educational technologies and pedagogies to ensure that growth is inclusive and equitable and at par with global standards. Digital platforms, mobile learning, and community-based training centers can bridge gaps in access to education, health, and agribusiness knowledge. By deploying technology in ways that are sensitive to local contexts, Kenya can empower marginalized groups to participate fully in the economy.

Through transdisciplinary co-creation of knowledge and problem solving, for example, mobile applications and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can disseminate real-time information, weather and climate patterns that inherently have great impact on crop production, animal health, and market prices. This not only improves productivity but also strengthens resilience against climate shocks. In health, telemedicine and digital health records can extend services to underserved areas, while in education, e-learning platforms can democratize access to training and research opportunities.

Cultural Knowledge, Ethics, and Equity

Inclusive development must be grounded in cultural knowledge and ethical principles. Kenya’s diverse communities hold rich traditions and indigenous practices that can inform sustainable solutions in agriculture, natural resource management, and conflict resolution. Embedding indigenous knowledge, community and cultural insights into modern pedagogies and research ensures that innovation respects heritage while promoting equity.

Ethics play a central role in resource management, urban planning, and mining when anchored strongly in transparent governance, equitable benefit-sharing, and community participation, to prevent exploitation and conflict resulting from biases embedded in AI technology. Equity must be the guiding principle to ensure that technological and economic gains are distributed fairly across regions and social groups, and that no community is left behind in the pursuit of Kenya’s national development.

Blue Economy, Marine Resources and Coastal Livelihoods

Kenya’s coastal regions hold immense potential through the blue economy. Research in mariculture, marine resource management, and climate change resilience is already underway in our Schools and Departments, with faculty and students engaged in projects that link livelihoods to sustainability especially in our Coastal context. Educational technologies can amplify these efforts by providing training modules for fishermen, digital monitoring of marine ecosystems, and dissemination of best practices in aquaculture.

The goal is to improve agricultural and marine production in coastal areas while safeguarding biodiversity. By integrating mariculture with crop and livestock systems, communities can diversify their livelihoods, reduce vulnerability to climate change, and enhance food security. Coastal development must also balance economic opportunities with environmental stewardship, ensuring that marine resources are managed sustainably for future generations.

The conference will embody the cross-cutting goals of the various schools of Pwani University and the overarching vision and mission of the University which are “…to provide quality education, training, research, science, technology and innovation for socio-economic transformation of society” and “To generate, disseminate and apply knowledge and skills while sustaining excellence in training, research and community outreach for sustainable development” respectively.

The conference scheduled to take place at Pwani University from 22nd – 24th June 2026, will serve as a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and showcasing ground-breaking ideas and innovations.

Highlights of the event will include:

  • Keynote addresses from community leaders, distinguished scientists, researchers, and policy makers.

  • Interactive sessions designed to spark innovative ways of knowledge co-creation and problem solving between communities, academia, government, and industry.
  • Opportunities for students and innovators to present their work and engage with global experts.

The conference and innovation expo promises to be a landmark event that advances transdisciplinary research and strengthens partnerships for sustainable development and improving real-world situations.
